The Jaminajar Studio
The studio is set mostly underground and yet there is decent natural light. The walls are all 60cm thick 100+ year old sandstone foundations offering excellent difractive qualities. The floors in both rooms are concrete slabs.
The studio was rebuilt in it's current form about 4 years ago. I stripped out the gyprock and false ceiling, jackhammered the render off the sandstone and brought the whole space back to sandstone walls, concrete floor and exposed beams in the ceiling.
The acoustic design was done by Mike Fronzek from Sound Spaces - in my opinion he is Australia's leading acoustician. We used the cavities created by the ceiling beams to build 8 helmholtz resonators and and further resonators were created in the space made by raising up the couch area. Then three large rockwool filled floating panels were added to the ceiling.
The result is an extremely accurate control room from an acoustic perspective and a very clean tight sounding recording space. So much so that projects intended to be mixed at more famous and expensive facilities ended up being mixed here for considerably less money and a comparable sonic result. Aside from the technical excellence in every aspect of the room there is also a huge benefit to be gained by having more time when mixing.
The equipment list is a select range of high end analog gear by the likes of Avalon, Rode, Neumann and Focusrite for the highest quality capture, with a low latency digital powerhouse back end by Apple, RME and Universal Audio utilising a hybrid summing architecture to maximise audio quality.
Our creative software of choice is Logic Pro with a wide array of third party plugins, instruments and libraries including BFD, VSL, Ivory and the full suite of UAD-1 plugins running on two cards.
Don't feel left out if you want to bring in a session from almost any other program as we can accept or convert almost any known audio and session file format. While the trend is towards virtual instruments we've kept a number of unique hardware synths including a revision 2.3 Prophet V and Kawai K5000r additive synthesiser. We also have a range of keyboard controllers available including a full 88 note weighted action piano style controller.
Come and take the tour and hear the difference for your self...
